Kumawood movies have earned a negative publicity and there is a widespread belief held by film critic detonating that movie sector is a complete embarrassment. Apart from the mediocrity and lack of creativity which pervades their plots, they also depict negative tendencies which have bad influence on the society especially children.

We are referring to the heap of insults that are exchange in almost Kumawood movies. And when one of the most popular and adored actresses in Kumawood, Christiana Awuni had the chance to address the issue in an interview on an Accra radio station; she rather justified their actions saying it is part of our everyday speech as Ghanaians. Really?

Christiana Awuni continued that insults are part of our culture; as it were so what they portray merely reflects what happens in real life. According to her the Twi language has been subjected to adulteration and misinterpretation so sometimes they have no option than to go ahead with the words, albeit offensive.

Perhaps fully prepared beforehand, the actress said Kumawood movies cannot be blamed for children who trade insult freely in the society because she knows a remote village where there is no electricity but children in that village can insult very well and asked rhetorically, “where did learn it from?”

She argued that children don’t pick up insults from their movies but rather from poor upbringing and irresponsibility on the part of the parents. Christiana wondered why their English counterparts flaunt insults freely and nobody sees anything wrong with it but is quick to judge Kumawood.

Kwaku Manu, Lil Wayne, Maame Serwaa and Rose Mensah aka Kyeiwaa are the forerunners when it comes to real vituperations in movies and we wonder why a movie director or script writer will condone such things.

When Kwaku was interviewed somewhere last year, he admitted the insults are too much and they are doing everything to tone it down and here is Christian Awuni justifying it.

In fact, ‘we can’t think far!’
