Animals are the latest to join the list of things coronavirus can affect. With a tiger testing positive for the deadly virus, it is clear that no human being or animal is immune to the ravaging virus.

According to online media report, a  four-year-old female Malayan tiger has tested positive for Covid-19. The cat is the first animal known to be infected with the deadly virus since it outbreak. Zoo keepers have linked the animal’s infection to an asymptomatic individual who infected the animal unknowingly.

“Our cats were infected by a person caring for them who was asymptomatically infected with the virus or before that person developed symptoms,”

According to a statement released by the Wildlife Conservation Society, Nadia, the tiger, is not the only cat having the virus. Her sister, Azul as well as other two Amur tigers and three African lions have developed a dry cough and all are expected to fully recover soon.

The Zoo reports;

“We tested the cat [Nadia] out of an abundance of caution and will ensure any knowledge we gain about Covid-19 will contribute to the world’s continuing understanding of this novel coronavirus,” 

“Though they have experienced some decrease in appetite, the cats at the Bronx Zoo are otherwise doing well under veterinary care and are bright, alert, and interactive with their keepers.”

“It is not known how this disease will develop in big cats since different species can react differently to novel infections, but we will continue to monitor them closely and anticipate full recoveries.”

Nadia is reported to be the sickest among the animals hence the need to test and treat her first since she’s losing appetite and weight at a fast rate. The other suspected animals carrying the virus will be be treated as well.
