The deceased is said to have unwittingly touched their iron fence, which was charged by electricity from live wires, whilst others stepped on it in an attempt to find shelter from the wind.

Janet Kwarteng, 30, Kaakyire, 25, Yaa Bertha, 29, and Oduro Christian, 14, were all killed. Others are two-year-old Emmanuel Agyeman, seven-year-old Simon Agyeman (siblings), and four-year-old Agyenim Boateng.

According to the Asutifi South Police investigation, the body was taken to Elizabeth’s Hospital in Hwidiem for preservation pending an autopsy.

The tragedy, which occurred about 6 p.m. on Friday, has left the city in mourning, according to a police release.

Rain clouds gathered in the early hours of Friday evening, turning into slight winds and finally a thunderstorm that tore the roofing off some of the community’s houses, according to reports.

The thunderstorm also brought down pylons in the city, leaving live wires on the iron gates of some buildings and others falling to the ground.

In an attempt to gain shelter at a nearby house during the storm, the deceased became electrocuted when they attempted to open an electrified fence.

Others were electrocuted after stepping on life wire in run-off. They were rushed to St Elizabeth’s Hospital, where five of them died immediately upon arrival and two others died shortly after admission.

Three other kids who were critically injured are also being treated at the same hospital. Also, the thunderstorm damaged property, including roofing on buildings worth thousands of Ghana cedis.

George Yaw Boakye, the Ahafo Regional Minister, has since toured the hospital and the homes of the bereaved families to express his condolences.

He vowed to help with the hospital expenses, the funeral ceremony, and the welfare of the deceased’s children.
