The Second Vice Chairman for Suame Constituency of New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Richard Asante, has rubbished calls for Hon Carlos Ahenkorah, Former Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry to be prosecuted for violating laws on Covid-19.

Mr Asante also described it as unfortunate, the calls for him to be withdrawn as the Tema West Parliamentary candidate.

Reacting to such calls in an interview with a section of the media, Mr Asante disclosed any attempt to prosecute him for spreading coronavirus will be unlawful.

According to him, under criminal law, one can not be punished twice for the same offence therefore such prosecution will amount to double jeopardy in law.

He said for Hon Ahenkorah to lose his position as the Deputy Minister amounts to a punitive act hence can not be prosecuted for same offence.

According to him, Hon Ahenkorah has confirmed he visited some voter registration centers but never admitted to have infected other person(s) with the virus.

He disclosed that to establish intention as required by law under criminal prosecution, will be difficult to do same therefore any attempt to prosecute him will fail .

On his candidature, Mr Asante said the act of Hon Ahenkorah does not breach any provision(s) in the Constitution of the ruling party therefore the party can not withdraw his candidature since he was duly elected by the delegates of the party.

Mr Asante therefore advised Ghanaians especially officials of the government to learn a lesson from what has happened to Hon Ahenkorah and stay away from the public when tested positive of Covid-19
