Ghana’s best footballer (in terms of personal records and landmarks) Asamoah Gyan has slammed his critics for always trying to find fault with him. The Black Stars walloped Ethiopia 5-0 in an AFCON 2019 qualifier at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium and instead of Ghanaians to revel in the victory, they turned their attention to Asamoah’s customised armband.

In the 73rd minutes of the match, the skipper was substituted and that was the moment people’s attention was drawn to the armband brouhaha. Gyan upon leaving the pitch did not and could not hand over the captain’s band to Andre Ayew, his deputy because it was customised. Andre Ayew had to be given a new one from the dugout, thus fueling the perceived rift betweeren himself and his vice.

Asamoag Gyan responded sharply, “it is quite strange that people are making comments about this armband thing after a huge win. Honestly I don’t know what people want again, Zanetti of Inter Milan had his picture on his arm band, Icardi of Inter Milan and Sergio Ramos as well so why it that anything Asamoah Gyan does becomes an issue. At the end of the day we have won and we should be happy with that.”

I found the argument being mounted by some sports presenters and football fans concerning his armband very pathetic. The captain has done so much for the team and I personally think it will take over 50-years for another player to break his records and instead of us to celebrate him, we rather dabbling in trivialities.
