On Saturday, a bizarre incident happened in one of the German Bundesliga games as striker Marcus Thuram was sent off for spitting at his opponent.

It happened in the game involving Borussia Monchengladbach and Hoffenheim. The game ended 2-1 in favour of the latter.

Thuram, the son of legendary French World Cup winner Lilian Thuram, was shown a straight red card in the 79th minute.

He has rendered an unqualified apology but is likely to be given a lengthy ban.

“That is not in my character and must never happen,” said Thuram.

“I reacted to an opponent in a wrong way and something occurred accidentally and not intentionally.

“I apologise to everyone… Of course, I accept all of the consequences of my gesture.”
