There are strange cultures and rituals in some parts of the world that will leave you utterly dumbfounded. What will make a man, a mayor for that matter ignore beautiful women and marry a crocodile?

It sounds ridiculous but it did happen in Mexico. A Mexican mayor in the southern town of San Pedro Huamelula has married a crocodile which is believed to usher in good luck to the local fishermen.

The crocodile, according to reports was dressed in a white bridal and the mayor, Victor Aguilar, sealed the marriage with a kiss. The crocodile’s mouth was taped shut. The ritual dates back hundreds of years and symbolizes the union of two local groups that were in conflict in pre-Hispanic times.

The groups are the Chontales and the Huaves. According to local legend, their conflict ended when the son of the Chontales king and the daughter of the Huaves king fell in love and got married. In modern times, the town’s mayor represents the prince of the Chontales while the crocodile represents the princess of the Huaves.

The Mayor, told reporters: “The Mareños Huaves call the crocodile a princess and the role I play is being the husband to the princess.”

The funny thing is that the whole ceremony was well appreciated by the indigenes. People were said have made merry whilst the ‘bride’ was paraded in town.
