An Army Commander from the Ghana Armed Forces is pleading with the president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to review the ‘100 meters away from water body’ galamsey operation policy.

Recall the president couple of weeks ago commissioned a new task force to help fight the operation of illegal mining polluting the country’s numerous water bodies popularly referred to as ‘galamsey’.

The new task force replaced the old group called ‘Operation Vanguard’ which was launched by the president in 2017 after he assumed office. Their orders is to crumple down any illegal mining activities near our water bodies and burn down their machines.

The task force after a couple of weeks of operation has been met with a lot of criticisms from the general public in their mode of operations as many believes that burning down the machines of the operators is not the best solution to the problem.

The president after hearing the concern of the people review his order to the group by telling them to spare mining operations that are approximately 100 meters (One kilometer) from any water body.

Speaking in a video where his platoon has arrested a Chinese national who was running an illegal mining site by connecting two tubes to a river body about a kilometer stated that the president need to review the new policy.

He stated the group that they have arrested is so clever that sophisticated that they connected one tube to pump water to their machine for washing the gold and using the other to dispose the water back to the river again.

He suggested that Akufo-Addo should give least a new dimension of two kilometers as a safe place to conduct any mining business to ensure the groups effectiveness to combat the the pollution of our water bodies.
