Two years ago, Ghanaians woke up to the sad news that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko has joined his ancestors. The calm looking Ghanaian lawmaker reportedly passed away after a short illness in the United States while receiving medical care. Eventually, his death paved the way for one of his wives, Lydia Alhassan to enter into parliament.

Lydia Alhassan wasted no time in announcing her intention of running for the vacant Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency slot right after her husband died on the ticket of the NPP. Her decision to contest the seat was met with vituperations from some quarters especially the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Surprisingly, NDC activist, Dela Coffie condemned the attacks on Lydia with a post on social media. A portion of his post that defended Lydia reads: ‘It is sad that people comment as if they come from perfect families. A lot of us here are sons, daughters, and grandsons of first, second and third wives who were recognized in customary practices save for the imposition of a foreign cultural practice cloaked in religion.

I daresay that some of you even had your fathers build separate houses for each set of siblings you had, and you mixed well with your half brothers and sisters. Yet you have the nerve to come here today and insult mothers, who don’t depend on you for their daily bread.

As an extension, this mirrors society’s attitude to widows and their kin, legitimate wives or not. We look down on widows as incomplete people, and we believe they shouldn’t be strong, and that they should only be in vulnerable positions where they beg everyone even for food to eat Yes, widows shouldn’t be able to continue business or professional life on their own terms because they lost their husband’s, their men, their “rock”.

A widow should stop everything in her life, including business activities that feed her and her children because her husband is dead. Should that be a widow’s debt? When a woman’s husband dies, does the whole world stop rotating? Are flights canceled? Does the president have to step down? The show goes on. Leave a woman to grieve, but know also that she has a right to keep life going for the sake of herself and whatever else she deems worthy of attention. Nobody is indispensable, and conducting business doesn’t show a lack of sympathy.’

Lydia won the election convincingly and now she’s seeking a second term by coming up against the NDC’s John Dumelo is this year’s general presidential and parliamentary election. She’s doing well as a woman and politician. Her recent photos prove it.
