The South African Police Service has confirmed the arrest of 126 suspects for various crimes.

This was contained in a recent statement released by the service and it was revealed that eight unlicensed firearms and twenty-six vehicles recovered.

PARKTOWN – Gauteng Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has commended the units from the Rapid Response Services (RRS) for their sustained and concerted efforts in support of operations geared at bringing down the volumes of serious and violent crime in the Province.

This comes as the Highway Patrol, the Flying Squad, and the K9 unit this past week apprehended a combined 126 suspects in addressing serious crimes such as hijackings, proliferation of illegal firearms and drugs. Eight of these suspects were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms in a stop and search on Gauteng freeways.

The eight suspects appeared before Gauteng various Magistrates’ Courts following their arrest over the weekend by the Highway patrol team and K9 unit. The members were conducting stops and search on Gauteng freeways when eight suspects were arrested on N3 and M1.

Meanwhile the Highway Patrol over the weekend successfully recovered hijacked vehicles and drugs.  A suspect was arrested for possession of the stolen Toyota Avanza and the suspect appeared in Pretoria Magistrates’ Court this morning, while the five other vehicles were found abandoned.

A combined 26 hijacked vehicles and eight illegal firearms were recovered by the RRS last week; and this does not include those vehicles and illegal firearms recovered during various operations including the weekly O Kae Molao operations conducted across the Province.

Furthermore in relation to addressing the drugs and illegal substances, the Gauteng K9 units followed information which led police in various parts of Gauteng where 52 suspects were arrested for dealing in drugs and possession of illegal substances and team recovered different types of drugs worth an estimated monetary value of about million rand were seized for further investigation.

Further investigations and profiling of the suspects are underway to establish possible linkage of the suspects to other crimes. The firearms will also be sent for ballistic testing to determine if they were not used in the commission of other crimes.”
