Onaapo is arguably the biggest political song of all time. The song enjoyed massive patronage from Ghanaians from different political background even though it was produced for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the build up to the general election in 2016.

The song, albeit its infectiousness and message, failed to woo voters to the side of the NDC and they suffered the heaviest defeat in their entire history.

Michael Adangba, a Ghanaian musician who previously composed similar campaign songs for the NDC, believe the song rather contributed to the downfall of the party.

He observed that the song was lacking a substantive message juxtapose that of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who came up with songs like songs like Asempapa Bi Mate Se Yesu Oye, Awurade Afei Na Adru Me So.

He said:

‘’As a presidential candidate or a political party, if your campaign message is in sync with the campaign songs you are using, you can win the election easily… but if what the message in the music is saying is different from the campaign message, you can lose the election easily’’, he reveals.

“The reason why we produce a political song is that if a candidate is at Bolga putting out his campaign message there, then here in Accra, the song will be putting out the same message, so the message easily gets stuck in the minds of the electorate.’’
